Hey Mitch I just needed to modify my comments slightly now that I have the context that this was an assignment in the marketing and promotions part of the course.

Hmm, I'm thinking, "Just when I've been chewing over 'What is an animator' and the concepts of animators as: actors, directors, film makers. And debating it with some animators on the ARC..."

Now Mitch you can't have thought by posting this up you would be safe from a few 'words of advice'.

Creative and entertaining. I like to see you guys being creative but most of all productive. Here we have some film making, there is always some illustration happening and last week a bit of character design in clay sculpting.

The editing on your film could have made the story timing a bit punchier. The black screen may be held for too long, as one example. But it looks like you had a pile of fun. I enjoyed watching it. Even though I don't want to say that because I am concerned that it is a distraction from actually producing animation (compared to a live action film). But credit where credit is due.

These links you make now with other creative people in the course will be very important in your career.

Now get back to animating! Apply some of that energy, skill and enjoyment you got from that task to your next animation project. Get on track toward your goal (that is everyone not just Mitch).

Look! Over there! A goal!: "I've decided to work on a narrative for end of year, working with the main focus being a 3D character with simple props to play around with, but I want 2.5D flash characters occasionally interacting with him to show both sides of my skills, one as an animator, and one as an illustrator."

-now I'm aweful curious as to watch you posted before your second post-

And thanx alot for taking interest in things out of my usual animated reports

I must confess this video was really the product of two animators with spare time during a lunch hour. we really wanted to spicen up the assignment from Janes task sheet asking for storyboards and a power point presentation.

unfortuneatly since we thought we could instead create an unfinished ad and then afterwards explain why we used the certain tactics to the class, jane thought we were trying to improvise instead of having it all jotted down in powerpoint presentation form.

-Lesson Learned-

but everyone had a good laugh, even ryan who was probably poorly targeted a little too much regarding to some of the jokes.

Second year animators do not have 'spare time'.

It should be scheduled out as animating, nourishment, exercise (mainly made up of 'acting things out') and sleeping.

At a stretch we could call this nourishment or exercise, but they are down the list in importance after animating.

As for completing the task. Lesson learned, as you note.

In a freelance job or in a studio, you have to make a huge effort to understand what the client actually wants before going off being creative.

Reading class task sheets and understanding the 'client brief' is good practice. Then, if your creativity runs off with your sense of understanding the task, you have to communicate. Meet with the client (teacher/ animation director) and say, "I have an idea on how to approach this task. Let's talk about it."

Building the skill of communication will carry you further than animation skill alone.
